A Word About Time
Where in the world does the time go, I wonder, when time goes by?
And how many times have I used that phrase?
As time’s clock ticks the moments of my life away,
After a second has passed …
Does it go somewhere?
Is there some great vault of moments,
Where the God of All Time
stores seconds,
and minutes,
and hours
and days?
The Book says He stores our tears in a bottle.
Is there some place he keep time?
Is time held for safe keeping
in some giant glass jar with a lid?
And what is time, anyway?
I read one dictionary that defined time as ” the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole.”
Say what? I’m not even sure what that means, and I’ve read the definition several times.
I’ve noticed, though, that it’s almost impossible to define the meaning of time,
Without using the word ‘time’ in the definition.
No. Most of us would struggle to define the word time.
We can’t necessarily define it, but we know what it means.
Time waits for no one.
We say time marches on, except … well, except that time doesn’t just march on.
It flies.
Time flies, doesn’t it?
I’ve heard some people say they’re having the time of their lives,
Until … well, until their time is up.
Where in the world does the time go, though,
As time goes by?
How many times have I said, “It seems like only yesterday …”
And then, the memory that follows?
It isn’t about yesterday at all.
When I recall what seems like only yesterday,
Invariably, I am remembering a time many years ago;
A story that bears repeating,
Or at least I feel it bears repeating.
Sometimes, what seems like only yesterday is a place;
It’s an invisible repository of recollecting
God’s work in my life.
I find it interesting, though, that the rate of speed of the moments I live
Seems directly proportional to the intensity of the trial of the moment.
Have you noticed? Time slows like a dirge, when the burden is great.
Time doesn’t fly when my load is heavy; time drags on and on.
And the burden doesn’t end … until it’s time.
Even after all these years, I don’t know where the time goes, when time goes by.
But I know where it came from.
Time came from the God who is timeless and eternal.
Time came from the God who said in The Book,
“There is a time for everything.”
The God who said there will come a time … when time shall be no more.
I think I’ll just pass time, in the meantime, singing that old song:
Moment by moment I’m kept in His love;
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am Thine.
Never a trial that He is not there,
Never a burden that He doth not bear,
Never a sorrow that He doth not share,
Moment by moment, I’m under His care.

Thanks, Ken, for this. You may be pleased to know that my background causes me to remember and quote hymns. This one , ” Moment by moment” had emerged in my reflections even last week. The word of God and Hymns: thank you for your easy knowledge and teaching which calls them to mind.
IN Him,
